Melvin Mark Development Company is proud to be working with the Blanchet House of Hospitality, a Portland-based non-profit, in its efforts to replace the existing building with a new facility to meet the needs of those who rely on the organization for food and transitional recovery housing. In our role as project developer, MMDC has worked for several years to secure a site. Constructing a larger, more functional and efficient building will allow the Blanchet House to continue its mission in the decades to come.
The new 36,410 square foot structure will have a size-appropriate commercial kitchen, dining room and associated facilities on the first floor. It will include a queuing area for guests so those awaiting service can gather indoors and out of the elements. The upper three floors will accommodate up to 60 working residents. New Markets Tax Credits, City of Portland Grants and a successful fundraising campaign will provide the financing necessary to complete the $13,000,000 project.
The hundred-year building was designed with operating efficiency in mind. In order to direct operating costs towards fulfilling its mission and not utilities, the building will achieve a LEED Gold sustainability rating. The new Blanchet House will rely on rainwater harvesting, high efficiency skin and glazing systems, and efficient (but practical) mechanical and electrical systems to generate significant water and energy savings.
Melvin Mark Development Company, along with SERA Architects and Fortis Construction, will begin the construction process in July 2011 with the demolition of the abandoned Kearnan building. In twelve and half months, the new facility will be open for business and ready to serve.
