James Beard Public Market

A public market is not a farmers market, though they have many things in common. A farmers market is seasonal, while a public market is permanent and year-round. Both focus on fresh foods, but a public market may also offer a wider range of prepared local foods and restaurants. A permanent public market can showcase local agriculture for residents and tourists seven days a week.

The James Beard Public Market is a project of the Historic Portland Public Market Foundation, which grew out of a citizen task force convened in 2000. Approximately 25 Portlanders from many walks of life – farmers, farmers market managers, chefs, restaurateurs, city planners, politicians, architects, anti-hunger advocates, nonprofit development experts, and more – met almost monthly for over two years to create a vision for a public market in Portland.

The group decided at the outset that the vision needed to precede the selection of a site. This vision eventually took the form of a statement of mission, values, and goals. In 2003, the Historic Portland Public Market Foundation was created, and a board of directors was formed out of the membership of the original task force. In 2005, the Foundation was granted 501(c)(3) tax-exempt status, and in 2008 they acquired the right in perpetuity to use the name “James Beard Public Market” to honor Portland’s native son who is widely acknowledged to be “the father of American cuisine.”
