When Melvin Mark built the Central Plaza Garage in 1965, it was the first public parking garage in downtown Portland. The half-block structure at the corner of SW 4th Ave and SW Alder St provides parking for both locals and visitors and is home to ground-floor retail spaces. While two additional floors of parking were added to the building in 1988, the overall design has remained largely unchanged.
In 2022, Melvin Mark and Hennebery Eddy Architects updated and refreshed several aspects of the building’s ground floor including new paint, new tenant signage, recessed storefronts, and new polycarbonate canopies with steel supports that increase pedestrian weather protection. Central Plaza’s location continues to be a convenient parking solution for nearby businesses, Downtown shoppers, and those visiting Portland.
